International Day of Women and Girls in Science

More than 80% of our total employees are female. As a result, the work that women do within our company can simply not be ignored as it is experienced every working day. This is why a day like this holds significant importance.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is acknowledged every year on the 11th of February.  Implemented by UNESCO and UN-women, it is a day that promotes the participation of women and girls in science while serving as a reminder that gender equality is vital for the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This year’s celebration is themed,

“Investment in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth”

We recognize that while we are an inclusive company with a largely female workforce, this isn’t the reality for many women and girls around the world. According to data from the UN Scientific Education and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), fewer than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and approximately 30% of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Hence, the need to drive full and equal access to science.

“We are scientists, engineers, pilots, doctors, we are who we want to be. Being female is not a disadvantage, so ignore the false stereotypes and pursue a STEM career if it is your desire. (Dr Jumi Popoola, Senior Director, Molecular Genetics and Operations, 54gene).

For the world to advance globally, there can be no gender bias. This is the reality we are proactively working towards.

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
